St Novä Scene, Beck journeys with “Prairie Pass”

Philip Beckett “Beck” started his public musical career as a member of Australian Indie darlings Popular Mechanics in 1978, releasing an EP and single before moving on to Samarai Trash. The Trash played the Sydney Pub circuits, releasing 3 singles with Virgin Records (Come Out and Play, Tell Me and Samurai Stomp) the original band went its separate ways in 1986 with version 2 continuing for some time after. Samarai Trash played melodic tunes with influences from folk to funk, rock to reggae, and the catchy pulsing rhythms still underpin Beck’s latest offering “Prairie Pass”. The band played a reunion show at the Annandale in 2017.

Scroll forward to the ’90s where Beck recorded his solo work under the name St Novä Scene, including the original Prairie Pass recording, which was lost to the world when the Underfoot Records studio burnt down, flash forward to 2020, technology & a touch of magic have salvaged the recordings for release. The bird has finally landed in the right place at the right time.

Single & video landed April 2nd, 2021, check them out here: https://ffm.to/prairiepass

Frankie Bouchier’s star is rising with “The Sun”

Sydney, based indie singer-songwriter, Frankie Bouchier weaves evocative stories with sound. As a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Frankie is equally at home balancing a trumpet on his lips or his fingers on the keys. Frankie’s unique brand of indie synth-pop, soars with a drama that is counterbalanced by hook rich harmonies and grounded rhythms. His soundscape reflects a soup of musical influences ranging from the guttural Balkan brass beats of Eastern Europe and the sweeping melodies of traditional Romani music to the psychedelic rock of the ’60s woven with the synch stylings of the ’70s.

“Sound is language, it crosses borders and cultures, the communication possibilities are boundless. I love to listen, I love to make sounds. It begins as an inner conversation and once expressed and recorded there’s the possibility of reaching outside yourself and connecting to others” (FB)

Frankie has been developing a body of work with Underfoot producer Mic. Hardwick over the last three years. “In our first session”, says Hardwick, “I heard such thoughtfulness, intrigue and vision, unlike anything else exactly, delightfully familiar yet quite distinct. Frankie’s songs somehow speak to the core humanity within us all, soulful and full of surprises.”

“The Sun” Frankie Bouchier’s debut single is an enigmatic ride, like early Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett having slipped through a dimensional tear to 2021, a witty and disquieting journey that combines elements of eastern surrealism and catchy beats. Imagine if you will, an Edward Gorey book as a musical soundscape.

Whilst a new face in the indie-pop scene, Frankie has performed alongside Broadway greats such as Patti LuPone, the Voice favourite, Darren Percival, and multiple shows and performances inside Sydney’s iconic Opera House. His sonorous voice saw him as a featured creature in the majestic Lumiphonic Creature Choir, and performances with Pacific Opera in their Young Artists Program 2020. Frankie also spends time as a support worker, musician, and actor for the not-for-profit theatre company Midnight Feast – (Theatre that Unites, an inclusive organisation offering actors with disabilities professional performance opportunities.)

In his final term at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, November 2020 sees the launch of his own creations. ‘The Sun’ is Frankie’s debut single, having signed to Underfoot Records earlier this year. There is something timeless in this song, joyful playfulness, an effervescent charm that balances strong musicality with the hooks of modern pop.

Unapologetically original “The Sun’ will be available for all to stream on 20-11-20.

A talent with Voice, Heart, and Soul…please welcome Frankie Bouchier to the stage…

Seeder’s Funny Looking Babies reborn

Seeder’s first studio album ‘Funny Looking Babies’ is reborn and available to stream.

A tasty grafting of musical roots, Seeder live is a punchy, raw 3-piece outfit of Bass, Drums and Guitar. This album features Mic.Hardwick as the lead vocal, with Nico Nelson on skins, and the fast-fingered bass hands of Dave Blennerhassett. Together they craft a rhythm section that beds down Seeder’s unique vocal style. This 11 song offering explores life, asylum, ego and hope. Old school indie rock grounded in rich layers of earthy groove. Featured artists on the album include internationally renowned trumpet player Don Raider on Flugel Horn and Clayton Doley on Hammond Organ.

Like many a hardy native species, Seeder has lurked underground waiting for just the right blend of heat, compost and chaos to launch. 2020 has delivered all that in spades. So stamp your feet and kick up the dust, coz the dance of life begins and ends in the dirt.

Blah Blah Blah help you recall 1989 with a re-release of “Remember”

The recordings for “Remember” were made in the heady months of 1989, a time when young egos were blazing, and the Mullet was yet to be given a name.  After a feature spot on Andrew Denton’s show, it seemed all was possible and the call from Countdown imminent.

Yet days before final artwork approvals Blah Blah Blah imploded, and differences were declared unreconcilable. Without Snapchat to document the emotional carnage, the ear candy of that late-night, cheap rate recording sessions, with girlfriends, mothers, and way too much of everything was shelved and thought forever lost after a fire destroyed Underfoot Studios.

Then miraculously, like a phoenix in an old brown Globite suitcase, those original master tapes were unearthed. Cleaned and baked the recordings were recovered, the collection, with all their quirky SFX song links, have finally been released and old bandmates reconnected.

We think the songs on “Remember- The Producer’s Cut” remain relevant, and in a few cases have become more meaningful as world events caught up with Brett Power’s lyric insight.

The songs were co-produced for Underfoot Records by the band and Brett Coupland of Bandit Audio, who also engineered. Recorded in the legendary Mr “Bad Habits” Billy Fields’ “Paradise Studio”, with overdubs at Col Joy’s “Glebe Studios”, and the final mix created beachside at Ian Mason’s beautiful “Music Farm” in Byron Bay.

The band line-up for these sessions was:

Brett Power: Vocals, Guitar
Mina Motu: Drums, Vocals, Guitar
Michael Hardwick: Bass, Vocals
Sam Shine: Lead Guitar
De Davis: Backing Vocals
Lisa Morgan: Backing Vocals

Brett Coupland: Sound Engineer

Music Producer Mic.Hardwick points satirical finger at Trump

Musician and record producer Mic Hardwick has launched a stinging musical attack on US President Donald Trump and his brand of tweeting politics. His parody song, Agent Orange, released on April 1, features a music video by respected Melbourne animation artist Matt Bissett-Johnson. Agent Orange, is a not so subtle dig at the political style of the current POTUS.

Hardwick, known around the Sydney music scene for his individual style and passionate idealism, says the idea for the song emerged at a dinner party where people were talking politics and he referred to Trump as Agent Orange.

“As time went on, I heard other people referring to him the same way, including rapper Eminem, which I thought was kind of cool. Good synchronicity”

Agent Orange features a canary, harking back to the caged bird used in the coal mines in days past, a distressed canary was an early warning. “A canary popped into my mind, all that tweeting, it never stops calling out ‘danger, danger’, so can it be trusted? I don’t use the word Trump anywhere in the song, but it’s hard to miss the subject matter.”

Hardwick with his long-time partner Deanne, operate Sydney based record label Underfoot Records where Agent Orange was produced and recorded. The April 1 release date is a bit of a nod to the way they feel about the American President. Perhaps more than merely an April Fool;

This is not Hardwick’s first musical dalliance with global politics. The song writer was on the receiving end of an angry tirade when his anti-war song Iraq Attack drew the ire of supporters of both George Bush Senior and Junior. Should he brace for the same kind of response from Trumpeteers, who tend not to respond well to criticism or jest?

Mic. Hardwick’s musical career began as the bass player with Blah Blah Blah who performed around the Sydney pub scene in the mid-1980s, gaining notoriety and recognition before a spinal tap implosion in the late 90’s on the eve of their first album release.

Undeterred and committed to independence, Hardwick realised early on in his career that he preferred to discover musical pathways of his own. “I simply wasn’t that great at playing other people’s songs” he says with a wry smile. Similarly, he was really only interested in producing original music, and has crafted Underfoot Studios, a unique audio facility that blends old school valve sounds with digital technology.

Hardwick is also known as the co-founder of Club Acoustica, a series of curated music evenings, offering the acoustic presentation of original music. The idea blossomed and chapters developed across Australia. Begun in 1998 and credited at the time for the renaissance of acoustic music in Sydney, performers like Sarah Blasko, Jeff Duff, The Beautiful Girls, Lyn Bowtell and Luke O’Shea, Club Acoustica graced the stages. Club Acoustica ran for over a decade with the Web archives now held at the National Film & Sound Archives of Australia.

Keen to understand music in all its intricate forms, he has developed a unique style. His lyrics and music reflect his idealism and embody the experience of loss, love, madness and pleasure. Singer/songwriter and producer, a creator, a seeker, a man who maintains a passionately spiritual individualism.

Seeder’s Testimony to Love

“Testimony” is a love ballad, it isn’t going to be on the album, no one wanted to shelve the recording, instead the band were in favour of letting it stand alone, a simple single to get things rolling again.

Penned by Mic Hardwick, in the wayback machine. The original recording and film clip were made possible by the collaborative energies of creative friends. Recorded, videoed to tape, pre-internet, the clip was never “officially” released; it sat forlornly on the shelf, though Underfoot Records did eventually slip it on YouTube a while back. Years passed, life danced somersaults with time and our dreams, bands changed, the world changed and Michael decided to rework his love song with his new band Seeder, and, when the final album selection was made, Testimony didn’t make the cut.  Not because no one liked it, it simply didn’t fit sonically with the other songs. So it was sent out on it’s own, dropping into sound streams in Underfoot’s February Love Bomb, free at last.

Michael wrote Testimony shortly after he and Deanne were married, it has journeyed with them for 32 years. Often requested by friends at shows and often sung along with by the audience. There’s something warm, simple and genuine about it that definitely appeals, particularly when played live., and as Deanne will admit it’s cool to have a song written for you. It tickles her when she hears him play it. Yet it also makes her wonder if it’s about her anymore? Is that “girl De” still in here, perhaps camouflaged under the wrinkles? Apparently she can still flash the affronted Red-Headed Dagger look of her youth, which still makes Michael laugh at her, she proffers “and that still infuriates me and that still melts the fury. Many Sunday afternoons later here we both are, still on the grass. We’ve raised a family and buried parents, we still hold hands when we go walking, and we still giggle when our cold feet meet in the dark under the sheets. We are a witness to each other’s lives, for better and for worse, nobody knows me as well as him, and he’s my best friend.”

The Latin root of Testimony is “witness”, as in an eyewitness testimony. A solemn declaration of fact with a hand on the bible and one on the heart, the “I swear” with no fingers crossed. The heart doesn’t lie; perhaps the odd hormonal rush confuses it at times, but it means well. In many ways when you get to know Michael Hardwick, you can see this song as his foundation; it’s at the root of him, love and family first. It’s his Testimony, so this piece of him has to be out there for the rest of his songs to follow. In a panel interview on the iconic Blah Blah Blah Show back in 1988, Michael joked with Andrew Denton about marriage and how much it meant to him. So perhaps Testimony Version 2 is like a renewal of their vows. Worth doing simply for themselves and also to affirm to friends and family and the great “out there” that long-term love is possible. It’s worth trying for, it is worthwhile, and it can stay vital and juicy, and it seems like a breath ago that it all began. Thirty years on Michael and Deanne are still married, their hearts do stand as Testimony. They are connected like old vines with deep roots, sweet fruit and so many memories. “Testimony” mark 2 has now evolved into family creation, this time around one of the offspring shot and edited the music video, and that feels so cool.

Back on Track-Underfoot Launch

Hallelujah and other exclamations of relief and delight could be heard amongst the invited guests at the Underfoot Launch Party. The 2015 Moontime diary declared that May 23rd was a “great evening to perform or entertain…all creative endeavours are favoured now”! Who could argue with that?

Like a Phoenix from the literal ashes, Underfoot Records is back in business after the fire that decimated spirits and destroyed recording masters 15 years ago. At the invitation only House Party the Underfoot Team welcomed friends and family at what turned into a fabulous extended celebration. After stunning performances from each of the Underfoot artists there was a “For the Camera” contract signing and universal Champagne consumption.  Special thanks to friendly and complimentary neighbours who chose to sit on their balconies and enjoy the songs. With the  Launch the new Underfoot Records website went live-  marked with the long awaited release of 3 singles from  Dave Blennerhassett‘s album Fifty Two Mondays.  A full photo exposé can be found in the gallery,  (Thanks Lani Tupu).  So three cheers for Underfoot and all who sail in her. (Damn Auto correct changed “sail” to “soil”- lucky the edits happened without Champagne)
